The primary system of personal combat taught at Dark Alley Defence is called the Dubhdorn Fighting Method. The name's roots are in Irish Gaelic. When translated it means “Deceptive Hand”. It has been derived from dozens of martial arts and self defence systems (Karate, Jeet Kun Do, Ninjutsu, Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Keysi Fighting Method, to name a few), broken apart and pieced back together in order to create one unified art based on simplicity, direction, and efficiency. In this system we focus on the ability to defend and survive in the most extreme but all too real situations. The maneuvers and techniques follow the natural movement of the body and - in a learned fashion - conserve energy and minimize danger to One’s self. Dubhdorn is a system that covers the three main ranges of attack; long (kicking), intermediate (punches), and close (elbows, knees, trapping, grappling, etc…). We focus on personal protection, and self defense. Under the following principals:
- Neutralize the threat
- Avoid injury
- Go from defending to attacking as quickly as possible
- Use the body's natural reflexes and movement
- Strike at any vulnerable point
- Use any tool or object nearby to equalize the situation
- Cause as little damage as necessary to alleviate the problem
- Do not try to prolong a fight
- Do what needs to be done and escape
- Your survival is what matters
All the techniques focus on maximum efficiency in real-life conditions. Under the stresses of a real life violent encounter, the body reacts in odd ways. These reactions are caused by an adrenal dump into the system which is induced by the natural human reaction to fear. It is because of these natural reactions that a lot of practiced martial artists freeze in high stress situations or use as little as 5-10% of the techniques they know. The adrenal dump causes slight loss of memory, and limited motor function. Dubhdorn focuses on these natural human reactions and attempts to make a practitioner of the system more aware of them in order to survive.
This system is for use as a tool to ensure your survival. It is not a culmination of exotic techniques and sport like practices. Dubhdorn is not a sport a martial art. It is not meant to be used in competition or in any other competitive type practice. It is meant for defence, efficiency and survival. It is the straight line between two points; the conflict you face and your freedom from the conflict.
